Paying for therapy

Insurance (in-network)

For individual therapy, I accept the following insurance:

Insurance billing logistics: I use Headway for billing. If you inquire about using insurance to pay for therapy, you will be sent a link to verify your insurance in the Headway system.  This lets you know what your benefits are and your expected copay/deductible/etc.

I cannot bill any Apple Health, Medicaid, or Medicare plan.

I do not bill insurance or provide superbills for couples therapy. Insurance billing and superbills are for individual therapy services only.

Insurance (out-of-network)

You may have out-of-network benefits that will pay for a portion of your therapy.  To assist you with this, I have partnered with Thrizer, a company that can do out-of-network billing or submit superbills (insurance receipts) on your behalf.  While Thrizer will attempt to verify out-of-network benefits for you, it is important that you understand what your insurance offers. Typically, insurance will only reimburse for individual therapy, not couples therapy.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

If you (or your spouse) have an EAP through an employer, you may have access to a limited number of free sessions for individual and perhaps couples therapy. Some of the insurance plans listed in that section above may include an EAP component. Please contact your EAP for a provider list or referral.

I am a Spring Health provider. To schedule with me for these EAP services, please contact Spring Health directly. If you are a Microsoft employee, follow this link for more information about seeing me via Spring Health EAP.

If you have an EAP affiliated with Optum, often in conjunction with United HealthCare medical insurance, you may be able to get an authorization that will allow me to see you via my billing service Headway. Contact your EAP for more information and an authorization.

Flexible Spending Account / Healthcare Savings Account (FSA or HSA)

You may be able to use these benefits to pay for individual therapy. Please check with your plan to ensure that these services are covered, and then you will simply enter your FSA/HSA credit or debit card as your payment method in my billing system or pay directly and submit for reimbursement. FSA and HSA plans typically cannot be used for couples therapy.

Funding through Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR)

I am a vendor with DVR. If you are a client of DVR in Washington State, your mental health impacts your ability to obtain or maintain employment, and you are unable to access appropriate and affordable mental health counseling with your insurance or are uninsured, DVR may be able to pay for your for individual mental health counseling. For more information, check with your DVR counselor or send me an email. CarlaLMHC@carlamullinscounseling.com

Private Pay

Couples therapy sessions are almost always private pay, with the only exception being some limited coverage by some EAPs. The session rate is $175 per session, and $250 for longer 80 minute sessions. Payment is collected through a credit card on file in my electronic health records system.

Individual therapy sessions are $155 per session. Payment is collected through a credit card on file in electronic records system.  I am unable to accept private pay if you have any Medicare plan (including supplement and advantage plans).

Reduced Fee Services

I offer individual therapy at a reduced fee for women and queer folx who are uninsured, underinsured, or have other demonstrated need for lower cost services. The rate for reduced fee services is $100 per session.  Additionally, I maintain one spot on my schedule at $60 per session (CURRENTLY FILLED).  I don't offer reduced fees for couples therapy. To inquire, please reach out to CarlaLMHC@carlamullinscounseling.com with “reduced fee” in the subject line.

Missed Session / Late Cancellation Fee

A fee will be charged for sessions that are missed or cancelled with less than 48 hours notice. Insurance will not cover this. The fee is $100, unless a lower fee is required per third party payor.

Exceptions: In the event of a true personal emergency (not work), I may consider a one-time request to waive the fee. EAPs have various rules about late cancellations and missed sessions; consult with your EAP directly.

Good Faith Estimate

You are entitled to a good faith estimate of the overall cost of therapy services.  The total cost of your therapy services will depend on how many sessions you attend and how often. You may choose to end therapy at any time.  Here is an example of how to calculate the overall cost of services:

# of sessions X session rate = total cost

§ Example 1: at $155 per session, an individual who attended 20 sessions would pay a total of $3100. If they attended 10 sessions, the total cost over time would by $1550. You pay for sessions as they occur, not in advance. You may end therapy at any time.

§ Example 2: at $175 per session, a couple who attended 15 sessions would have a total cost of $2625. You pay for sessions as they occur, not in advance. You may end therapy at any time.

§ Example 3: at $100 per per session, an individual who attended 10 sessions would pay a total of $1000. If they attended 20 sessions, the total cost over time would be $2000. You pay for sessions as they occur, not in advance. You may end therapy at any time.

The above examples apply only to those paying directly for services. If you are using insurance, your portion is determined by your insurance company and may encompass deductibles, copays, coinsurance, or other amounts.

Other factors to consider - You are responsible for missed session/late cancellation fees. I may suggest books or other resources that you may chose to purchase at your own expense.
